Happy Halloween! I hope everyone has a safe and fun holiday. Sid and I are still trying to determine his costume. For a long time, Sid’s dream has been to be a bag cat at Target. He absolutely loves bags of all shapes and sizes. Hopping in them, hiding behind them, taking naps on them…such great fun! Although the Target dog may thwart his aspirations of actually living out his dream at Target, he could be a bag cat for Halloween. When I started watching the Property Brothers on Netflix, Sid began to admire Jonathan Scott and started a few demo projects of his own around the house. He seems to want the carpet removed and replaced with hard wood flooring. So a construction worker is another idea. Considering all the weather we’ve had lately and the color of his fur, he could easily be a storm cloud. He’s nice and fluffy and dark gray. We could collaborate. I could carry an empty bag, and he could roam free. I’d be the one “who let the cat out of the bag.” If we decide to go our own costume routes, I’ll be a Royals fan for sure. What a day it has been. Torrential rains began pouring down from the sky at 4:30 am. A tornado warning was issued around 10:30 am, but we were spared. I-35 closed down between Austin and San Antonio, and the Austin airport ceased all flights in and out for part of the day. It is still raining, and I believe it is going to rain through part of tomorrow. I took this picture through my front window this morning. With all the rain, maybe nobody will notice the tears in my eyes after the Royals’ loss tonight. Actually, I think it’s been a great series so far.

Way to go Royals!!! Baseball doesn’t get much more exciting than last night’s game. It’s the bottom of the ninth, and the Royals are trailing by one. Alex Gordon hits a home run to tie it up and take game one of the World Series into extra innings. The nail biting continued inning after inning. It’s the bottom of the 14th, and Eric Hosmer steps up to the plate with bases loaded. He hits a fly ball deep into right field. The ball is caught. Escobar tags up at third base and sails across home plate just ahead of the throw. After 14 thrilling innings, the Royals finally achieved a well-deserved victory over the Mets. Hats off to my boys in blue!

First and foremost: Let’s Go Royals!!!
Game one of the World Series has been pretty exciting so far. Hopefully this is the year the Royals win it all! I will never forget the I-70 World Series back in 1985 when the Royals defeated the St. Louis Cardinals. That was a very special moment in my childhood.
I missed the beginning of tonight’s game as I was outside with my neighbor cementing in two new fence posts. My latest DIY project began earlier today when I dug two 24+ inch holes. This wasn’t the easiest of tasks as my 40-year-old back will attest, and I must confess I begrudgingly dug and dug and dug. Someone close to me had asked if I found the fence damage overwhelming. I said I wasn’t thrilled about it. Truth, yeah, right now, it is overwhelming, and I’m not happy about it. It’s a pretty crappy time for it to have happened. As I worked out my aggression digging, I realized this broken down fence was a lesson in gratitude. Wiping the sweat from my brow, I had to admit to myself that I am grateful I can physically dig these holes. Not everyone is able. I am grateful for my home and my land. I should joyfully take care of it. How fortunate am I that I have a neighbor who will be meeting me later to move the fence panel, mix the concrete, and set the new posts?! Not everyone would do that. And how can I not be thankful for my ever present supervisor?!
It was dark by the time we finished putting in the posts. Tomorrow I will find out if the fence section will remain intact or if I’ll be learning how to build a fence. After moving the section, I think it’s going to be ok with the exception of a few pickets. So as the day comes to an end, I am feeling some relief about the situation. I am truly grateful and know things could have been much worse.

Well, the rain has finally subsided, and last night I was finally able to go look at the fence 
damage. It was a much larger section than I had originally thought. Sid loved the excitement of a downed fence. Plus, it makes an awesome cat fort. Sid did not want to come back inside the house. He wanted to stay outside and play under the fence. From his perspective, I’m sure it was pretty fun.
On a more positive note from my perspective, I received my copy of the Sun-Maid Healthy Living cookbook in the mail today. This was the FREE booklet I mentioned in the October 4th post. The “Bubblin’ Nut and Fruit Wich” in particular sounds pretty tasty. I will have to give that recipe a try.

Rain has been pouring down since the early morning hours and is still going strong 
tonight. It’s been the kind of day where you just want to stay home and curl up for a nice long nap, and that’s just what Sid did. While we desperately needed the rain, it’s just too much too fast.
The remnants of Hurricane Patricia wreaked havoc on my fence yesterday. I had heard the wind howling and watched the trees swirl around as torrential rain poured down from the sky that afternoon before I had to leave for the evening. My neighbor later text me pictures of the damage. I have yet to get out in the daylight to assess the situation. The rain just hasn’t relented. One more project added to the to do list!

I really wish Sid would learn to relax a bit. Actually, I wish I could just let go and relax like Sid. How amazing would it feel to be that at peace?! Maybe I should try this new adult coloring trend. I’ve seen adult coloring books in stores, you can print pages from the internet, and Michaels is even sponsoring a FREE in-store adult coloring event this weekend. Initially the new fad sounded a little strange to me, but when I think about it a bit, it might be great fun to hostess my own adult coloring party. Print some pages, serve some snacks and maybe some wine, and laugh with my nearest and dearest friends. I think the coloring pages would reveal who had what kind of day and also a little of each person’s personality type. Meticulous? Colors outside the lines? Lightly and gently colored or boldly pressed Crayon strokes? Yeah, the idea has definite potential. It will be interesting to see how long the adult coloring fad lasts. It really is an inexpensive and clever way to relax.

After having company, there’s a lot of cleaning up to do around the house. That includes cleaning out the leftovers in the refrigerator. My guests were of great help providing me with additional bottles for the bottle border around my lemon tree, but they left a lot of beer bottles still full in the fridge. I do not like beer at all and will not drink it. I do, however, enjoy fresh warm beer bread alongside a nice big bowl of soup. Beer bread is so simple to make and requires minimal ingredients. Thinking about it makes me hungry for a big bowl of chili or beef stew.
This is the first time I’ve used a higher quality beer to make my Easy Beer Bread. I would normally buy a cheap light beer. Personally, I find the Sierra Nevada a bit strong in the bread and even somewhat bitter. The cheaper beer made a sweeter loaf with a less detectable beer taste. If you have a beer you prefer to drink, I would start there. If you don’t want to touch the stuff, this recipe works just as well with a can of Sprite or 7Up.

It’s been a pretty exciting day for Sid. While out watering this morning, I saw Sid running across the yard with a nasty little tail dangling from his mouth. Of course he feels compelled to bring his hunt up to the patio. I turned off the water and walked over to see what my great hunter had caught this time. His keen hunting prowess had yielded him a small lizard. Sid enjoyed “playing” with his new little friend for quite a while. Somehow I don’t think this was how the lizard had hoped to spend the day. Sid reluctantly came back in the house but seems quite content and pleased with himself. Check out the video below to see the great hunter in action!
Since this morning’s hunt, we had an uninvited guest arrive via the security door in back. I
immediately alerted Sid to the security breach, but he was unavailable until he heard me open the door to shoo the lizard outside the house. I don’t know if the intruder arrived to avenge his buddy’s untimely demise this morning or just got lost, but he was definitely not welcome! Sid was soon on security detail keeping the area safe. After I shut everything back up and locked the security door, I watched Sid stand on his hind paws and stretch all the way up to reach the inside lever door handle. He pawed at it. It was locked, but I realized what he knew. I definitely need to keep that door locked or somebody will come and go as he pleases. After Sid started the treadmill while I was in the shower one day, I don’t doubt his capabilities.

Listening to the soothing rhythm of the horses galloping behind my tall back fence, I’m enjoying this beautiful 
afternoon in the shade of my back patio with a big glass of sweet tea. Sid has just joined me much to my delight. On this particular afternoon, he’s had an unusual fixation with the utility pole situated in our back yard. I wouldn’t put it past his curiosity and athleticism to try and climb it. I can’t imagine anything going wrong there, can you?!
We’re near the end of October and my tomato plants are
starting to produce again. I’m not sure how great the crop will be, but I’ll take any fresh produce I get at this point as a bonus. Some of my marigolds are doing well, and some of the saplings appear they will soon meet their inevitable demise. My lemon tree is going strong, and I cannot wait for all of the lemons to ripen. Barring any unforeseen tragedy, it’s going to yield a good crop this year. Several green bean plants are still going strong, but the
carrots and beets remain among the great unknown.
While I love being outside on a gorgeous day listening to the birds chirp and watching the horses between each fence picket as they happily trot along, fall brings the darkness a bit earlier. Sunday night is probably my favorite night to curl up on the couch and watch tv. I’m eager for tonight’s episode of The Great British Baking Show followed by several Masterpiece productions. Hopefully Sid will be ready for a nap after his big afternoon outside. If not, I’ll be casting a fishing pole from the comfort of my couch.

The house is quiet except for the sound of the birds happily chirping in the front yard. 
Sid is asleep in the next room as I am typing away and thinking about lunch. I ate so much good food while my guests were here. While we ate out a lot, I did prepare some meals at home. The Sausage Breakfast Egg Bake tasted exceptionally good to me. Prepared a day ahead and baked the next morning, it makes a nice big pan for a group. It happened to work out perfectly that the last morning Bret and I consumed the last two pieces. It was easy to make and tasted delicious. While my guests from Wisconsin are still in Austin, they are no longer my responsibility. The 
Society of Actuaries is taking care of them for the rest of their trip. Bret and I had Monday and Tuesday to enjoy more sights and tastes of Austin. Since Bret missed Chuy’s and it’s my favorite restaurant, we went there on Monday. Tuesday, Bret and I ventured downtown to the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. Texas is rich in history, and the museum is very well done. Since we had parking for the day at the museum, we decided to walk to Wahoo’s Fish Tacos for lunch. We walked right around the Texas State Capitol and through its beautiful grounds on the way. The fish tacos were excellent, and of course I had downloaded their app to get a free meal. That’s 
the Tank Top and Tennis Shoe Girl way! It must have been the delicious meal
making our bellies content that made the walk back seem so much shorter.
Overall, we did an excellent job checking off the list of restaurants and activities I had prepared for my guests. It was a really fun time. Sid is very timid around people other than me, but he did play fishing with my cousin and really likes my brother. Bret was even able to pet him by 
the time he left. Considering Sid typically cowers under the bed when there’s company in the house, I think they’re officially buddies.
The bottle ring has made some serious progress. It’s a lovely morning so Sid begged to go
outside and proceeded to inspect the new border around the lemon tree. I hope it meets his standards. I like it.

Of Monsters and Men did not disappoint. They were excellent live, and boy can that
trumpet player play. The drummer enthusiastically rallied the crowd standing atop his drum stool, clicking his drumsticks together in time with the beat. We could hear a little of Hozier from another stage afterward when Bret and I snuck off for a bathroom break and Salt Lick bbq. By then we couldn’t get back to our group through the crowd of people already gathering for the festival’s closing act, Florence and the Machine. She was definitely high energy doing her countless twirls across 
the stage. This tennis shoe girl can respect Florence’s choice to go sans footwear (as opposed to super high heels like a lot of singers). We never did tell the others they missed out on some great bbq. It was delicious.
We definitely covered some mileage on the Lady Bird Johnson Hike and Bike Trail going to and from the festival. Considering the heat, distance, and some minor chafing issues, my guests from up north handled the walk with honorable perseverance. I feel privileged to have attended this iconic Austin music festival with such a fun and easy going group.

Today is our big ACL adventure. Of Monsters and Men is the main attraction for my group. It’s a beautiful sunny day, and it’s going to be pretty hot out there.
We ate up Austin pretty well yesterday. Rounder’s Pizzeria on West Sixth Street is one of my favorite pizza
places. The New York style crust is awesome–nice and crispy on the outside but soft and “bready” on the inside. Num. We managed to catch the excitement of the end of the Longhorns/Oklahoma game at Doc’s Motorworks. Now there was some electricity in that place! The wings weren’t too bad either. My brother, the musician, and I walked down by Lady Bird Lake to see the Stevie Ray Vaughan statue. Meeting back up with my cousin on the South Congress Bridge at dusk, we hoped to see the grand display of millions of Mexican free tail bats making their nightly voyage for food. It got darker and darker and no bats. Finally some started circling around the edge of the bridge. By now, it was pretty dark, and you couldn’t see much. Bat watching season runs from March to October. This was by far the most disappointing showing I have ever seen. Yet we can check it off the list of must do activities in Austin. We topped the evening off with Amy’s Ice Cream–a definite Austin staple. I like their coffee ice cream with Heath mixed in it. Their most popular flavor is Mexican vanilla.

Two of my three guests arrived yesterday. They so graciously started doing some much 
needed “man work” around the house right away. The bottle border around my lemon tree is only half done. I ran out of bottles. Clad in their new Texas garb, my guests were happy to pitch in and help. They have informed me that Sierra Nevada is a healthy beer. I like the color of the label.
After an amazing dinner at Chuy’s and a good night’s sleep, the three of us went to pick up Bret this morning. Keeping with tradition, I presented Bret with the customary welcome pineapple. If you’ve ever watched Psych, you probably know that a pineapple appears in some form in every single episode. Bret and I are both
fans of the show. Hence the Coke and Bret pineapple tradition.
Poor Sid doesn’t know what to think about everything, but he’s intrigued with my cousin, the experienced fisherman, casting the fishing rod and mouse lure across the house.

Has anyone seen Sid? Has anyone seen my web host lately? It’s been missing the last couple of evenings. I’ve had a really busy week, and my host service has been unavailable at night, so I apologize for the recent delay in my blogs.
My company will soon be arriving so it’s time for the special touches I like to call “Niceties”. I want all my guests to feel welcome and comfortable in my home. I try to place myself in my guests’ shoes and anticipate any potential needs. What might they forget? What could 
present an awkward situation for them (no toilet paper in the bathroom, etc.)? My brother won’t have a private room to himself, so I’ve put together a basket of items he might need. That includes the kind of shampoo and conditioner he uses, a flashlight, and a big box of Kleenex since he’s allergic to cats. I’ve also printed a list of local restaurants and points of interest.
I had a little extra fun preparing souvenirs for this weekend’s guests. I found inexpensive Texas t-shirts and customized them. Then for presentation, I rolled them up, tied them with jute and used Texas inspired cookie cutters to cut out name tags.

I should have listened to Sid. He was right. Yesterday, he begged all day to go outside. When I went to get the mail, I figured out why. It was a lovely day–a nice reprieve from the heat. I should have been doing yard work instead of fretting over cleaning inside the house. Today it’s supposed to get back up to 90 and is the day I set aside to mow and clean up the yard. I did go ahead and mow most of the backyard last night because it was cooler, and I’m sure glad I did. It wasn’t fun being out in the heat this morning. I did get the front yard mowed and trimmed, some flower saplings transplanted, and more green beans planted. The driveway and sidewalks have been sprayed to get rid of the grass and weeds growing up through the cracks, and I sprayed some weeds in the backyard. Hopefully, the Amdro will take care of the fire ant mound by the hosemobile.
As the first thing my guests will see, I want the yard and exterior of the house to look nice and neat. I trimmed the hedges last week
which made a significant improvement to my home’s curb appeal. Sid sat in the window and supervised. Yes, I missed a few leaves on the ledge. I still have several outdoor projects to do to spruce up the yard and patios, but it’s hot, and I’ve had enough sun for one day. I will continue to chip away at my yard chore to do list, and hopefully complete most, if not all, of it before my company arrives. My house is in complete chaos right now. Curtains are down, furniture is out of place, and the washer has been running all day. Company’s coming!!!

I have often said my name should be Murphy. There’s a law named after me. Perhaps you’ve heard of it? While I’d like to think I take my lot in life with reasonable humor, I’m just one of those people to whom the strangest things happen and for whom nothing ever goes smoothly. How many of you have completely unplugged your sprinkler system and the water still wouldn’t shut off? Ever been sprayed in the face by a tiger? And for some reason I feel destined to become the spokeswoman for Discount Tire. “It seems you are no stranger to flat tires,” the young associate says to me… I once asked a friend if the story of my life would be a comedy or a tragedy. He laughed and said, “A comedic tragedy.”
An even more interesting phenomenon occurs when my younger brother and I are together. I’m not sure how it’s possible, but it’s an even worse combination. Things somehow always turn out to be a disaster. We take it in stride as par for the course, but everything is an adventure. Nothing is simple.
So when Bret shared an “easy” recipe with me, it stands to reason that it would present some unforeseen challenges. Seriously, how hard is it to buy a premade graham cracker crust and Key lime juice? Bret goes to Hy-Vee and buys a cute little bottle of Key lime juice in the exact proportion he needs. I checked three stores to no avail, and since Key 
lime is KEY, I squeezed 18 tiny Key limes by hand. I went to two Targets in search of a basic 6 oz graham cracker crust. BOTH stores were out of stock. So crushing graham crackers am I, and homemade crust it is!
Challenges aside, the recipe for Bret’s Key Lime Pie With a Twist is rather a clever way to use our favorite Super Scrummy Sweetened Condensed Milk. It really is a remarkably simple recipe for a fresh and tangy dessert after a nice meal. And truly, the hardest part was waiting for the pie to chill 4 hours in the fridge before tasting it!
