Soap Sud Powdered Detergent20150814_193315

1 cup baking soda

1 cup Borax

1 bar of Ivory soap (4 oz)

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees.  Place 1 cup of baking soda into a pan.  Bake 40 minutes stirring every 10 minutes.

While the baking soda is in the oven, grate the bar of Ivory soap.  Combine the grated Ivory soap and Borax stirring well.

Once the baking soda has turned into washing soda, remove from the oven.  The texture will have changed.  The bowl on the left contains the baked baking soda or washing soda.  The bowl on the right is holding regular baking soda.

Let the washing soda (baked baking soda) cool completely.

Combine the washing soda with the Borax and Ivory soap mixture.  Stir thoroughly.

Store in an airtight container.  I leave a tablespoon measuring spoon in the container for ease of use.

Use 1-2 TBSPs for an average load (for me that’s extra large with minimally soiled items).  Adjust the amount based on size of load and level of dirtiness.

Quality control is very important in our house.  The process is always well supervised from a comfortable distance.

Soap Sud Liquid Laundry Detergent20150814_192147

3 Tablespoons baking soda

3 Tablespoons Borax

2 Tablespoons liquid dish soap (I used Up & Up’s version of original Dawn)

8 cups of water

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.  Place baking soda into an oven safe dish and bake until the texture changes stirring occasionally.  (I baked the 3 TBSPs along with the 1 cup used in the recipe above which took about 40 minutes.  The smaller amount should take less time.  You might consider making a double batch since you’re already making the washing soda out of the baking soda.)  Let the baked baking soda (washing soda) cool.  After the baking process, it will look like the bowl on the left.  Note the change in texture.

In a large container, combine the Borax and washing soda with 2 cups of boiling water.  Stir until dissolved.  Add in the liquid dish soap.  Stir well.  Pour in the remaining water, and mix it all together.  It will maintain its watery consistency.  Use 1/4-1/2 cup per load.

I used an old Tupperware container to mix the detergent.  I have transferred part of it into an old dish soap bottle so I can give it a little shake before use and so that it’s easier to dispense into the washer.  Ideally, I would like to put it in an old laundry detergent jug.  But for now…

i have used your samples of both the liquid and powder laundry soaps that you gave me. Both worked very well in my front load washer. I used the powder with a tide boost packet on our running clothes. I was impressed with how well it worked with the boost pod leaving our “stinky” clothes smelling fresh. Thanks for the samples!

Glad to hear they both worked well. I appreciate you trying them out in a front load washer and letting us know the results.
