Happy Leap Day! It’s probably not much of a leap to say I’m one of the few people actually happy to get in line behind someone wielding a stack of coupons twice as big as mine, and that’s just what I did at Target today. I was eager to see if I could learn anything from the lady whom I had observed shopping earlier. Like me, she had her phone out and coupons ready to figure out the deals. Ultimately, I didn’t observe anything notable. In fact, my experience at the register went much smoother than her transaction. My neighbors should be pleased I mowed and string trimmed the front yard this morning. Riddled with weeds, the lawn needed a trim and to be sprayed. It definitely looks a lot nicer, and hopefully the weeds will die after being treated.
While I was outside, I noticed a pipe beside my air conditioner draining water. That particular spot has been oddly saturated for months now, but this was the first time I had actually seen the source. My first thought was the air conditioner, but that hasn’t ran in months. I haven’t turned on the heat since last winter (I do believe I actually made an entire winter without heat!). Because of the location of the pipe, I began to think it might be the water heater, and a little google research seemed to back that theory. So I went into the garage to inspect the drip pan. It was completely dry. At that point, I knew I needed to check the attic.
Now, I am terrified of heights and have an inner condition which affects my sense of balance (I’m weirdly wobbly on escalators). Armed with a flashlight and my cellphone just in case, I mustered the courage to ascend up the ladder. Being the man of the house, Sid gladly charged right up the ladder behind me and gave the attic a thorough inspection. Fortunately, everything was dry and in order. The only dilemma was Sid thought the attic was really cool and wanted to stay up there. No matter what I tried, he refused to come down until he was good and ready.
Since our exploration, I have talked to a neighbor who said it was indeed the water heater and most likely a pressure valve on top going bad. Now to fix it…
On the bright side, he commented on how nice my yard looked.

What a busy day! Our Wednesday started early much to Sid’s delight (he would prefer 4 or 5 am, but that’s not happening!). With the excessive wind, I was unable to set out the trash, recycling bin, and bag of yard waste last night, so getting those gathered and to the curb was top priority this morning. One fence picket had blown down, so I nailed it up again. The backyard has been in need of some attention for awhile now, and today was that day. I mowed and string trimmed the overgrown lawn and weeds. What a huge improvement. In fact, the backyard looks really nice, if I do say so myself. While my mower and trimmer batteries were recharging, I exercised my lumberjack skills. As usual, that was thoroughly exhausting, but the garden border is making progress. After four hours of yard work, a shower, and a piece of carrot cake, I set out in pursuit of cow poo. As a member of the Home Depot Garden Club, I get coupons occasionally. My most recent coupon expired today, so I decided it was time to get my Black Kow composted manure. Joe Lamp’l from Growing a Greener World (great show on public television) recommends it. Black Kow is the good, pure stuff. It’s not the cheap topsoil with a little composted manure mixed in it. Most 
importantly, it doesn’t stink. It’s composted, not fresh, so it’s just like working with soil. Once Home Depot and/or Lowe’s puts the Miracle-Gro on sale, I will mix them together in the garden boxes and plant my veggies. Subie was a beast hauling the 500 lbs of cow manure all the way home. Once the bags were unloaded into the garage, Sid gave them a thorough inspection. For the most part, the farm cat took the day off today (had to resort to a stand in). Perhaps it was the mower that kept him inside the house. Later in the day, he did want to go outside and play with the birds. I’m not sure, but I think I saw robins. Spring!!!

The wind is howling outside today! As predicted, storms rolled through during the night delivering some much needed rain. The precipitation has now given way to a strong wind storm with the potential of gusts up to 45 mph. May my fence remain a wall of strength and the trees be firmly rooted in the ground!
I am really excited about the nice soaking rain we received, and I’m guessing my flowers are too. A reinvigorating drink of rain water should do them good as they are reawakening for spring.
My hopes are high this year for the most beautiful flower garden yet. Pulling the border stones forward, I hope to give the plants more room to grow and add better soil. I’d like to continue lengthening the garden as well. That will be a gradual process over the next few years most likely. Having saved a jar full of seeds from last year’s flowers, I hope to fill in the garden this spring with marigolds.
The farm cat was not inclined to the noisy high winds and remained close to the house until I finally let him back in a few minutes later.

Carrots, carrots, carrots! Fresh garden carrots are delicious. I’ve been eating them raw as well as cooking them in the crockpot with chicken. Of course Sid is always in the middle of the action. The farm cat knows it’s time to harvest the carrot patch so that’s right where he is, ready to help in any way he can.
Yesterday, I thought it’d be fun to make a carrot cake using freshly harvested carrots from the garden. I literally walked into my backyard, picked what I needed, and took the vibrant orange root vegetables inside to use in the cake. I love being able to do that!
In an effort to continue my Mary Berry cake baking lessons, I decided to use her carrot cake recipe. I had to improvise a bit as I didn’t have any light muscovado sugar and was all but out of powdered sugar. Giving it my best creative effort, I added sorghum to extra gritty granulated sugar to use in place of the muscovado sugar in the cake batter, and I used a stick blender to turn granulated sugar into just enough powdered sugar for the cream cheese frosting. The cake turned out delicious.
Mary Berry’s recipe was full of surprises. Her secret ingredient was banana. Fortunately, I had bananas in the freezer and even ended up adding a bit extra because of how they were packaged when frozen. Mary adds no spices to the cake batter which I prefer, as I’ve never been a big fan of heavily spiced cakes. I am intrigued that none of her recipes so far have called for vanilla in the cake batter itself. Next time, I am tempted to try adding some vanilla and will definitely use more carrots. I am not sure I converted the carrot measurement correctly. Whether I did or didn’t, it needs more carrots!
It was fun to sit down with my British bake, cup of tea, and an exciting new episode of Downton Abbey. Last night’s show was a treat. The extra long episode got back to the intense drama, wit, and humor that has made Downton Abbey the brilliant series it is. When the family realized Lady Edith could outrank them all was such an awesome and ironic moment–my favorite of the night. Lady Mary was poised with venom and ready to strike, the Dowager Countess returned to bestow her grandmotherly wisdom, and poor Mrs. Patmore was plagued with scandal. I cannot wait for the next episode, but am heartbroken it’s the series finale. I have one big hope for the fate of a particular character. Now I have to wait two weeks to find out what happens.

Couch Potatoes
My remote control has been driving me crazy. After changing the batteries twice already, it still doesn’t seem to be working very well. I find it absolutely infuriating to be pushing a button repeatedly and have nothing happen. Then sometimes, unexpectedly, it’ll move through more channels than I want. During these frustrating occurrences, I have discovered that I get several channels I never knew existed. Most notably, I’ve found an old game show channel. I had forgotten how at the beginning of Family Feud, the family members stood frozen like a portrait while being introduced. The groovy fashions and hairstyles are a hoot, but Richard Dawson going down the line and kissing all the women on the lips is a bit, well, awkward and gross. Seeing a few old Family Feud episodes reminded me of the old Wheel of Fortune days. Anyone else remember when the contestants had to spend their winnings from each round on prizes from the little rotating rooms?
It’s fun to reminisce, but it also makes me feel middle aged! I just caught up on Season 2 of When Calls the Heart on Netflix. Seeing “Frisco & Felicia” (playing Bill and Nora) look so old is incomprehensible. They’re the young, “it” couple from General Hospital, right?!

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say I don’t think it’s just my farm tools that have taken a beating. It appears it’s time for a new pair of work gloves. While I’m not keen on having to replace all kinds of gardening equipment, I’d much rather wear them out than let them sit neglected in pristine condition. Tools are meant to be used.
My new limb saw got decent use today. Home Depot has their mulch on sale, so I’m starting to get more serious about my raised bed garden border. As much as I love the individual character of each limb, I think realistically, I need to cut them down into straight logs to make a nice, clean border. Unfortunately, it’s an exhausting process. You’ve seen my work gloves, my hands are a bit sore too.

My farm tools have been taking quite a beating lately. Perhaps it’s the direct result of the superhuman strength I’ve developed from my lumberjack workouts. Of course, it doesn’t help that the soil is like concrete because of its natural composition and the continued lack of rain. Ironically enough, I was using the rake and hoe to try and improve the quality of the soil. My goal is to remove the weeds and loosen up the existing dirt in the flower bed in order to mix in and add better soil. The metal garden rake came to its demise quickly which was disappointing since I just purchased it last year. Last night when I decided to try using the hoe, I was thrilled at how well it was working. I then strayed from the flower garden to hack up a few weeds in the yard. That proved to be a devastating blow to the poor hoe. It’s supposed to be in the 80s today so Sid and I will definitely venture back outside to enjoy the beautiful weather. Hopefully we won’t break anything today.

Sid was busy looking presidential in his new fort (aka my new garden box) yesterday. I am quite pleased as to how the three 18″ squares turned into a nice 3’x6′ box. After considerable deliberation, I decided putting it next to the other boxes is the ideal location. I like it!
Carrot production is delaying the reconfiguration of the other 4’x4′ boxes. Fortunately for my stomach and the new garden layout, the carrot harvest is imminent. I pulled a few of the delightful, orange root vegetables yesterday and look forward to tasting them. They look great, but I think the others can grow just a bit more before harvesting. Sid’s favorite beet patch will soon be ripe for the picking as well. Once the carrots and beets are reaped, it will be just about time to start planting the spring crop.

Sid and I worked on reconfiguring the garden boxes yesterday afternoon as it was a lovely 83 degrees and sunny. Several of the bottom boards are starting to rot which explains why some had popped out of place. Using the better boards now on the
bottom and building the box up with the more worn boards, I built one big 4’x12′ garden box out of two 4’x4′ boxes. I intend to repeat the process on the two 4’x4′ boxes behind it. The two boxes to the right will remain as they are. Those are the ones I built myself on the kitchen floor.
In preparation for this expansion, I had removed my three 18″ square boxes, initially intending to just move them to another location. I quickly realized I could break them down and create a larger box or two. Contemplating the options, I’m liking the size of the box in the photo to the left. There were enough boards to create two of them. Right now, I’m leaning toward stacking the two 3’x6′ boxes. The next dilemma is where to put it.
While I was busy working, Sid requested to go inside for a bit. Soon, I let him back outside with me. A little while later I needed to run inside for a moment and quickly smelled why he needed to go into the house. My refined farm cat needed to use the litter box. I am honestly not sure he knows he’s a c-a-t. Gotta love my boy!

Historically, February 10th, hasn’t been a great day for me. Seventeen years ago we unexpectedly lost my grandpa, and two years ago I came home from work to find my front door missing. The house had been burglarized. I was horrified and in complete shock. My stomach sank even further as my thoughts went to Sid. My greatest fear was that my baby was gone. I found a neighbor who was home, and he, along with a gun and his teenage son, approached the house with me. As we entered, we found the door (still locked) lying in my entryway and partially in the dining room. The heartless thieves along with my computers, tv, ipod, etc. were gone. My neighbor was kind enough to secure the door until I could replace it. I was very grateful for his initiative as it took three hours before the police arrived, and by then, it was night. In the meantime, I had walked around the side of the house on the exterior and saw Sid cowering behind the curtain in my bathroom window. Elation is an understatement. Don’t get me wrong, I was very angry and upset about this crude violation, but the house (a thing) could crumble to the ground as long as Sid (a living creature) was ok.
New Security Door
While it was a burglary for me, it was a home invasion for Sid (The cop explained the different terminology to me. I am glad it wasn’t a robbery.), and he was traumatized. Once everyone had left the house that night, Sid did come around and surprisingly wanted to play. So that we did–there was no way I was going to be able to sleep, and the remote no longer had its tv. However, a few days later, the doorbell rang. Sid and I both jumped and looked at each other. It rang again, and Sid ran. He hid under my bed for a good half an hour. I went in a couple of times to try to reassure him, but he had to come out when he was ready. On another occasion, my parents and I were on the outside the newly installed security door inspecting the freshly painted trim. Sid was on the other side of the door watching us from the inside of the house. For whatever reason, Mom rang the doorbell. Sid was terrified and sprinted away as fast as his little legs could carry him. He saw us, but he clearly associated the noise with that terrible day. It’s taken a couple of years, but he is doing better when the doorbell rings.
I confess, this is one area in which I struggle to forgive. In my heart, I cannot comprehend how people can be so despicable and evil toward others, and I’m glad I can’t. The crooks deserve what they got–minimal value items. My technology was dated but still worked–I am Tank Top and Tennis Shoe Girl after all! Right or wrong, my comfort is in knowing that in the end, they have to explain their actions to their maker. As for Sid and myself, we now live in Fort Knox.

It’s 71 degrees and sunny right now. There’s a significant breeze which adds a slight chill to the air, but from what I’m hearing from relatives up north today, I cannot even begin to complain. Sid’s busy napping and patiently waiting until he can go outside and play. I have plenty of work to do in the yard, so his wait shouldn’t be much longer.

Happy Chinese New Year. It is officially the year of the monkey. Yet, somehow I think it will once again be the year of the cat in my house.

Sid and I have been busy dreaming about a new layout for our raised bed garden area. Mowing around the boxes is tedious, so we are contemplating sectioning off the area and adding mulch. Right now we’re experimenting with a natural, rustic look. Utilizing our fallen timber as the border just might work. It’s still a puzzle to piece together aesthetically, but the idea has potential. The boxes also need to be reconfigured. I’d like to turn two 4×4 boxes into one 4×12 box. Creating two 4×12 boxes will give me an additional 32 square feet of growing area without acquiring additional boxes. It will also cut down on the amount of mulch needed when sectioning off the area. If it all works out, I might be a little less upset about losing the tree.
While we still have plenty of time to work on garden design, time to prepare our Super Bowl menu is diminishing. If you’re still looking for ideas, might I suggest one of my absolute favorite dishes? I love Creamy Chicken Enchiladas. I’ve never been a fan of corn tortillas, and this delicious dish uses flour tortilla shells instead. Happy Ground Hog Day! It has definitely felt like an early spring here. Sunday’s high was 86, and I’m not going to complain about the recent 75 degree days. The rest of the week will be considerably cooler but still mild considering it is the beginning of February.
